Cellular Data Usage

How to Tell if You're Connected to Wi-Fi or Cellular

When you're at home, work, or a friend's house, it's always best to connect to their wi-fi network since it's faster, more secure and will save you from using cellular data.

When you're in your car, traveling, or just out and about, you'll likely be using cellular data. Which if you're like me, you monitor since your Cellular Provider charges you for overages.

Here's how to quickly tell if your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or is using Cellular Data.

Looking at the status bar, if you see the Wi-Fi Symbol, you're connected to a Wi-Fi network.

How to Stop Chewing Up Cellular Data

Worried about using up your precious data on your cell phone plan? I hate getting those notifications from Verizon saying that I've used 90% of my data plan.

One of the biggest culprits is automatic updating of apps. When this setting is ON, apps will initiate an update at any time. Turning OFF this setting lets you control when apps are updated. I only update mine when I'm connected to Wi-Fi, which usually means when I'm at home.

To change background app refresh, go to:

Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn OFF the settings.
