Why I Started Boomer Web School
I started Boomer Web School when I realized my peers continually asked me for help with their iPhones. After all, I was known as the tech-geek in the crowd.
It was easy to give app advice, and I loved seeing how my tips helped empower my friends to make the most of the technology they used every day.
Technology changed my life and my career. In my late 40’s, I became a self-taught web-developer. I learned to code and troubleshoot problems; all online.
Digging into issues I was having with my iPhone, I learned to quickly find answers and also found tips and tricks that saved me time, money, and increased my understanding. What did I do with the information I uncovered?
I learned how to blog so I could share it with you.
I started writing about the apps I was using and solutions to the problems I had. Boomer Web School was born! I started it as a side-business, having fun using my design skills and website building skills.
I was really proud of what I was creating. It was truly a labor of love. Other people started to notice and tell their friends. My email subscribers quickly grew beyond my small group of family and friends.
People over 50 want to learn from someone like them.
I approached my local library and soon found myself in a classroom. I found I LOVED teaching. I was completely energized when I could see the light bulbs come on for my students.
That led to becoming an Adult Ed instructor at my local community college, and before I knew it, I was tapped by the editors of the Huffington Post to write a monthly column to help boomers make the most of their technology.
Through all these in-person interactions, I discovered that there is a finite set of things to learn about the technology we use on a day-to-day basis. The key is grasping the fundamentals before you learn more complex topics.
After all, you wouldn't dive into Algebra before learning basic math.
I make things simple. I have a knack for taking complex concepts and breaking them down so they’re easily understood. The result? A series of videos that take one topic at a time, thoughtfully building knowledge until you achieve a strong, foundational understanding of your iPhone.
I use a Tell, Show, Do method of teaching, since it was the most effective way I learned as an adult.
The way it works is I’ll Tell you why the topic is important, Show you how I do it using video instruction and then ask you to Do a few tasks associated with the topic so it really sinks in.
People who take the time to actually DO the work, see the quickest results.
Like you, I’m a lifelong learner. I love to write, travel, and more.
Creating Boomer Web School has been the culmination of the technical and design skills I’ve gained along the way; with a new found love for teaching.
I’ve helped hundreds of people go from being overwhelmed with their iPhones and iPads, to feeling like they’ve mastered it.
I am postive I can do the same for you.
Understanding the technology that you use every day will give you flexibility, opportunity, and freedom – whether your idea of “freedom” involves capturing family memories, learning something new, or staying in touch with friends; both near and far!
Moreover, when you combine newfound tech skills with your inherent creativity and other natural gifts, the sky’s the limit.
So what are you waiting for?
I cannot wait to see how your newfound mastery of your iPhone and iPad will improve your life and help you achieve your dreams.
